INTRODUCTION

The Global Serial Communications Program allows computer users to use FileMaker Pro 3.0 to send commands to serial devices. It may work with other applications which support Apple Events. It can also receive commands and store them in a text file which FileMaker can import. User windows in the serial program allow interactivity and to set the program in a "manual" or "automatic" mode.

The Serial Program opens up a vast new host of applications for programs like FileMaker Pro which previously had a difficult time communicating with any external device. The ability to SEND commands not only gives FileMaker Pro the ability for home automation, but also the ability to send information to GPS units and other serial devices. It also receives data after a command is sent, or can be used for data sampling where the user can set the number of samples and sample interval. This may be useful in detector probes such as temperature, motion detector, wind and lab equipment.

Further development of the Serial Program allows FileMaker Pro the ability to RECEIVE information from serial devices and save to a text file-- whether it be a one time "event" or for data logging and sampling ! The applications for this second stage of development will allow FileMaker Pro to monitor temperature probes, home security, biofeedback, record digital signals, etc. This will enhance the uses of FileMaker Pro beyond belief ! This program gives FileMaker Pro the dynamic ability to COMMUNICATE with other devices.
